CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Five runs in the fourth were the difference in the game as Memphis (33-23) dropped its regular season finale at Southeast Missouri State (24-31) 9-4 on Saturday at Capaha Field.

Memphis attempted to jump ahead early, but the U of M failed to get a bunt down and ran into another out at third. Back-to-back walks put two on with no outs in the inning, but three pitches resulted in a called third strike and an out for the Tigers. Memphis sent both runners for a double steal on the first pitch to Tucker Tubbs, but the lead runner was thrown out at third for the second out. With a runner on second and two outs, Tubbs flew out to rightfield to end the frame.

After the Tigers left runners on first and second in the second inning, SEMO grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the frame. A one-out double off the top of the leftfield wall followed by a two-out double by Clayton Evans brought the run in for the Redhawks.

Memphis answered in the third with three runs, all scored with two outs. Zach Willis led off the third with a single through the left side and a one-out walk to Carter White put two runners on. After a lineout was stabbed at third for the second out, Drew Griffin came up with a two-out RBI single to leftfield to tie the game and>Nate Rupiper followed with a double down the rightfield line to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. A walk loaded the bases and the Redhawks walked Bryce Beeler to plate the third two-out run in the inning, making the score 3-1 in favor of the Tigers.

The Redhawks scored one run in the bottom of the third, but five runs scored in the fourth inning had SEMO looking at a 7-3 lead. Memphis starter>Alex Gunn hit the leadoff man in both the third and fourth innings and the Redhawks made him pay for the mistake. Following the leadoff hit batter, SEMO strung together three hits and used a walk to plate five runs in the inning. SEMO added their seventh unanswered run in the fifth as back-to-back two out doubles made it 8-3 in favor of the Redhawks.

Memphis bounced back to get one run back in the sixth to cut the deficit to 8-4.>Ford Wilson led off the sixth with a double tucked inside the leftfield line. Wilson advanced to third on a fly out to centerfield and crossed the plate on a RBI groundout by Ethan Gross. The Redhawks got the run back quickly in the bottom of the seventh as an error on a stolen base attempt put the runner on third before a wild pitch brought him in for a 9-4 SEMO lead.

The Tigers moved runners to second and third with one out in the eighth, but SEMO kept the U of M from cutting into the lead. Wilson blooped a single into left-centerfield and Willis worked a walk to put two on. A failed pickoff attempt moved the runners into scoring position, but the Redhawks got out of the inning with a strikeout and fly out.

Rupiper and Wilson paced the Memphis offense with two hits each in the loss. SEMO out-hit the Tigers 11-6 on the game.

Memphis is the No. 4 seed in the Conference USA Tournament that begins next week at Rice. The full bracket and game times will be announced later tonight.
