Memphis will field a 2014 squad that features 11 newcomers. GoTigersGo.com introduces you to junior college transfer Damo DeMatteo as part of the Around the Horn series of question and answers with newcomers.
DeMatteo played the last two seasons at Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland, Tenn.. He is a native of Hixson, Tenn., lettering three seasons at Soddy Daisy High School.
Question 1: Why did you choose to play for the Tigers?
Damo: I really liked the campus. As soon as I got on the campus, I felt like I could really see myself being here. Also, I loved all the coaches. I really had a warm, fuzzy feeling about it.
Question 2: What's been the biggest adjustment you've had to make to Division I ball?
Damo: It is definitely a big leap from JUCO ball to Division l as far as the speed of the game, and it is a lot more complex.
Question 3: Whose your favorite MLB player, and why?
Damo: Daniel Nava, he's an outfielder for the Red Sox. I didn't know anything about him until somebody told me to read his story. I read his story, and it's pretty incredible.
Question 4: If you didn't play baseball, what sport would you choose to play, and why?
Damo: I'd probably play golf. I go hit it around a little bit sometimes. I'm not very good though. It's a fun game.
Question 5: What's your favorite thing to do when you're not on the field?
Damo: I'm a big outdoorsman. I hunt and fish a lot. That's usually where I spend most of my time, especially right around the Christmas season I'm duck hunting a lot.
Question 6: What is your favorite restaurant in Memphis?
Damo: Texas de Brazil. It's pretty legit.
Question 7: How did you get started playing baseball?
Damo: I didn't start playing baseball until I was 12 years old. I watched my brother play - he's three years younger than me - and I thought `I may want to try this out.'
Question 8: What's your favorite TV show?
Damo: I like being up to date on sports so I guess SportsCenter.
Question 9: What would be your favorite walkup song?
Damo: My walk out song in high school was "Sound of Madness" so I guess that would probably be it.
Question 10: Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions?
Damo: As far as I stretch, I do the same thing in order every day. I usually eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich before the game.
Question 11: What country would you most like to visit?
Damo: Italy because my family is Italian.
Question 12: What parts of your game are you trying to improve?
Damo: I'm trying to get better as a player physically and mentally. As an overall ballplayer and as a leader, I'm trying to get better.
Question 13: What's your favorite thing about Memphis?
Damo: I love the campus and the city.
Question 14: What's one thing your teammates would be surprised to know about you?
Damo: I'm a pretty open book. I try not to be shy.
Question 15: Who is the guy in the clubhouse that keeps it most upbeat?
Damo: I would say Ford Wilson.
Question 16: Nickname of your first little league team?
Damo: I think we were the Cubs.
Question 17: What non-athlete would you want to meet most?
Damo: Probably my great-grandfather because I never got to meet him, and I heard so many stories about him.
Question 18: If you could have one superpower which would you choose?
Damo: To fly. I think it would be pretty cool to fly.
Question 19: At which store would you like to max out a credit card?
Damo: There's a lot - Bass Pro, Sportsman's Warehouse, Gander Mountain - the outdoor stores.
Question 20: What's the farthest you've been from home?
Damo: I've been to Montana to ski.
Question 21: Least favorite thing about yourself?
Damo: I have curly hair and I don't like it. That's why I keep it short.
Question 22: If you were selecting movies for a bus trip, what would you pick first?
Damo: Forrest Gump

Damo: Probably "Night Moves" by Bob Seger

Damo: No not at all

Damo: I think I'd like to go on a date with Jennifer Aniston.
