Memphis will field a 2014 squad that features 11 newcomers. GoTigersGo.com introduces you to junior transfer Jake Overbey as part of the Around the Horn series of question and answers with newcomers.
Overbey played two seasons at Ole Miss before transferring to UT Martin to play football last fall. He is a native of Jackson, Tenn., where he lettered four years at University School of Jackson.
Question 1: Why did you choose to play for the Tigers?
Jake: I'm from Jackson, and it's close to here. I knew a lot of the guys on the team so that's one of the reasons I chose Memphis.
Question 2: What's been the biggest adjustment you've had to make getting back to Division l ball?
Jake: The routine of everything - making sure everything you're doing is the same every day. You have to realize you're going to have a bad day once in a while and just be okay with it, but know what you did wrong.
Question 3: Whose your favorite MLB player, and why?
Jake: I like Derek Jeter. He is someone I wish I could play like. The way he plays defense and the way he hits, I just respect him.
Question 4: What's your favorite thing to do when you're not on the field?
Jake: Anything outdoors. I like to hunt.
Question 5: What is your favorite restaurant in Memphis?
Jake: I went to Rendezvous for the first time and I absolutely loved it.
Question 6: How did you get started playing baseball?
Jake: My brother's a year older than me and he was always the first one to do everything a year before.
Question 7: What's your favorite TV show?
Jake: NCIS. I like the crime shows.
Question 8: What would be your favorite walkup song?
Jake: I've had the same walkup song since I was in high school. It's "Magic Stick" by Lil' Kim.
Question 9: Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions?
Jake: I wear my socks inside out.
Question 10: What parts of your game are you trying to improve?
Jake: My hitting. I wish I could hit for power. Everybody wishes they could hit the long ball.
Question 11: What's your favorite thing about Memphis?
Jake: There's so much stuff outside of baseball to do. Coming from Martin, there's McDonald's and Wendy's and that's it. As soon as I moved in, I've been running around everywhere.
Question 12: What's one thing your teammates would be surprised to know about you?
Jake: I'm a black belt in karate.
Question 13: Who is the guy in the clubhouse that keeps it most upbeat?
Jake: Michael Sillyman
Question 14: Nickname of your first little league team?
Jake: When I was in Dixie Youth, it was Strickland Roofing because one of the coaches worked there. We went undefeated for like three years in a row.
Question 15: What non-athlete would you want to meet most?
Jake: I've been wanting to see the movie Lone Survivor, and I read the book. Marcus Luttrell wrote the book and was the main character in the movie. I wish I could meet him.
Question 16: If you could have one superpower which would you choose?
Jake: Either fly or transport because I hate long drives.
Question 17: What's the farthest you've been from home?
Jake: I've been to Las Vegas when I was 10 for a World Series.
Question 18: Least favorite thing about yourself?
Jake: I get sidetracked real easily. Sometimes I catch myself talking too much.
Question 19: If you were selecting movies for a bus trip, what would you pick first?
Jake: I'd probably pick a war movie like Lone Survivor.
Question 20: Most embarrassing song on your iPod?
Jake: I don't know how it got on there but I have Yanni.
Question 21: Can you dance?
Jake: I think I can.
