University of Memphis sophomore first baseman Trey Wiedman was named Conference USA co-Hitter of the Week, the league office announced today. He shares his first-ever weekly honor with Rice's third baseman Diego Seastrunk.
"I'm very excited, and Trey (Wiedman) is extremely deserving of this honor," said Tiger Head Coach Daron Schoenrock. "After a year's absence, hitting in the middle of the lineup is a difficult undertaking, but Trey is handling it just fine."
Wiedman led the Memphis offense this past week with a .647 (11-for-17) batting average, seven RBI, three home runs and three runs scored, while also walking three times for a .682 on-base percentage. Wiedman posted multiple hits and homered in all three Memphis wins, including banging a solo shot and a three-run blast in consecutive games to help the Tigers win the weekend series versus Ohio University. In addition, he slugged 1.235 and had 21 total bases. More impressively, the Tiger first baseman was perfect at the plate in three of the five games this week. He started the week by going 5-for-5 with his first career homer versus UT-Martin, and 2-for-2 against Murray State to tie the Memphis baseball record with hits in seven consecutive plate appearances. The Germantown, Tenn., native then went 4-for-10 with two homers in the weekend series win over Ohio. Included in the weekend was a 3-for-3 performance in a 5-4 Tiger win. He wrapped the week up by going 1-for-3 with three RBI and providing Memphis with the knockout punch--the three-run blast--en route to a 9-4 series-clinching victory.
Prior to this week, Wiedman had played in just 21 career college baseball games and had made just eight starts. He hit .303, with two doubles and two RBI as a freshman in 2006.
Seastrunk helped Rice to five-straight wins last week and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the annual Houston College Classic Tournament at Minute Maid Park. Seastrunk batted .455, with 10 hits, two home runs and two doubles.
