Tigers Closer Jonathan Van Eaton Earns C-USA Pitcher of the Week Honors
March 4, 2013
IRVING, Texas - After earning three saves in three Memphis wins last week, Tigers closer Jonathan Van Eaton has been named the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
"It is always comforting to have a guy in the bullpen late in games that has the experience that Jonathan Van Eaton has," head coach Daron Schoenrock said. "Jonathan got off to a little bit of a rocky start, but it seems that he has really found himself now. We lean on him very heavily in the late game situations and its good for a reliever on this deep pitching staff to get the credit he deserves."
Earning saves in three consecutive outings, Van Eaton inched closer to the top of the record books last week. With 12 career saves, the junior right-hander needs three saves to claim the top spot in the program records. Van Eaton closed out the Tigers 4-3 win at No. 8 Ole Miss on Tuesday, the first win in Oxford, Miss., for the U of M since 2003.
Van Eaton entered Friday's game against ULM and earned his second save of the week with two strikeouts and a groundout in the ninth. Saturday, Van Eaton recorded the quick two-out save for his 12th career save. On the week, Van Eaton did not allow a hit and struck out four batters.
This is Van Eaton's first career pitcher of the week honor and he is the 14th different Tiger pitcher to earn the distinction. Overall, Memphis has now had a C-USA Pitcher of the Week 24 times.
Memphis (7-4) plays host to Buffalo (6-4) this weekend at FedExPark. First pitch in the series opener is slated for 6:30 p.m. Friday.
