Ryan Fraser Tabbed C-USA Pitcher of the Week for Second Time
April 19, 2010
IRVING, Texas - For the second time this season, a Memphis baseball player has earned multiple Conference USA Weekly honors. Senior pitcher Ryan Fraser hauled in his second C-USA Pitcher of the Week award after earning a save against No. 14 Mississippi and a tossing complete-game victory at Houston last week. Fraser is the first Tiger pitcher to earn multiple Pitcher of the Week honors since Derek Hankins was named the league's Pitcher of the Week three times in the 2004 season.
Fraser, who was the league's Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 22, played a substantial role in a pair of Tigers' wins this past week, going 1-0 with a save in two appearances. For the week, he notched nine strikeouts in 10 innings of work. The Cleveland, Tenn., native made his first appearance out of the Memphis bullpen on Tuesday, and with the Tigers ahead 6-5, closed the game out with three strikeouts in the ninth to earn his first career save in Memphis' first win over No. 14 Mississippi since 2003. He bounced back on Saturday to guide the Tigers to their first-ever victory over Houston at Cougar Field. Fraser made his weekly start against Houston in game two of the weekend series and tossed 124 pitches en route to an 8-2 complete-game victory--his second complete-game win in league play. He scattered nine hits and fanned six.
Fraser's league recognition is a record, fifth C-USA weekly honor for Memphis baseball in the 2010 season. In addition to Fraser's two awards, Tyler Huelsing has earned a pair of C-USA Hitter of the Week honors (March 22 and April 5). Brennon Martin was selected as the league's Pitcher of the Week on March 29, 2010.
Fraser and the Tigers will open a five-game homestand on Wed., Apr. 21, when they host Arkansas State. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
