Baseball Duo Grabs C-USA Weekly Honors
May 7, 2012
IRVING, Texas – Dan Langfield was named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week and four home runs in the series sweep earned Jacob Wilson Co-Hitter of the Week Honors, the league office announced Monday. Langfield pitched seven shutout innings in the series opener with UAB and earned the win as the Tigers downed UAB 8-1. Langfield fanned 11, the second-straight game and third time this season he has posted a season-high of 11 strikeouts. Of Langfield’s 11 punch outs in the game, all 11 were swing and misses. The seven-shutout innings gave him his 10th quality start of the season and sixth against a C-USA foe this year. Langfield allowed just three base runners to reach scoring position in his seven innings on the mound. With his 11 K’s, Langfield has 99 on the year, fifth-most in single-season history and most among C-USA pitchers this season. Wilson hit .500 in the three-game sweep of UAB and he reached base two or more times in each game to sport a .615 on-base percentage. The Bartlett, Tenn., native slugged at an impressive 1.700 clip and had 17 total bases on the weekend. Wilson blasted four home runs in the series and had five RBI and six runs scored. He scored the game-winning run in Friday’s 8-1 win over the Blazers and later ripped two home runs, a solo homer in the second and a two-run bomb to left in the sixth. In Saturday’s win, Wilson walked twice and scored a run, one of two runs scored on the game-winning hit in the eighth. On Sunday, Wilson belted two solo home runs in the Tigers 8-6 victory. The talented duo earns C-USA weekly honors after the Tigers collected their fifth-straight victory over a C-USA foe for the first time since 2007. The sweep of UAB gave the Tigers to sweeps of C-USA opponents this season, most sweeps of C-USA opponents since 2007. With the sweep, Wilson and the Tigers have won five-straight C-USA games for the first time since 2007 and completed the second sweep of a league foe this season. Langfield picks up C-USA Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time in his career (2/28/11). Wilson earns C-USA Hitter of the Week accolade for the second time in his career (5/11/09). This marks the fifth occasion that the Tigers have a hitter and pitcher recognized in the same week. The Tigers host Tennessee at FedExPark on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. All tickets are $10 and extra seating will be available. The game will be televised on Fox Sport South.
