Pods for 2011 C-USA Baseball Championship Announced

IRVING, Texas - Conference USA announced the pairings for the 2011 Conference USA Baseball Championship presented by Trustmark and the University of Memphis baseball squad is scheduled to open play at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday against UCF at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss.
Memphis (29-25, 12-12 C-USA) finished with a .500 or better win percentage in conference for the second-straight season and sixth time since joining C-USA in 1996. The U of M joined Rice, Southern Miss and East Carolina as the only teams in C-USA that weren't swept during the season.
UCF (36-20, 12-12 C-USA) won the three-game series in the regular season at FedExPark. Memphis will face the Knights in the conference tournament for the second time. The U of M earned a 12-6 victory over UCF in the 2007 tournament in Greenville, N.C.
The Tigers will take on top-seed and C-USA regular season co-champion Rice in day two of the tournament at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. Rice came back to win game three of the series at Rice and earn the series victory over the U of M at Reckling Park last week. In tournament play, Memphis is 1-3 against the Owls. The Tigers lone victory over Rice at the C-USA Tournament came in the 2007 season with a 2-1 triumph in the semifinal round. In the other three tournament games, Rice has outscored the Tigers 34-18.
Thursday's game with Rice will be carried live on CBS Sports Network, formerly known as CBS College Sports. The other three games on Thursday will also be carried live on CBS Sports Network.
Memphis will face UAB in day three of the tournament at 9 a.m. on Friday. The U of M swept the Blazers at Young Memorial Field earlier in the season. In tournament play against the Blazers, Memphis is 3-4 all-time and 1-1 in C-USA Tournament games against UAB. The two clubs squared off in the 2006 with the Tigers earning a 13-2 decision over the Blazers.
The 2011 Conference USA Baseball Championship presented by Trustmark consists of the top eight teams in regular-season league play and teams are split into two-four-team pools or pods, with the winner of each pod playing a single championship game on Saturday, May 28 at 7 p.m. Teams in each pod will play all teams in its pod and no teams outside its pod and each team is guaranteed to play three games in the tournament. The team with the best composite record in each pod advances to the championship game. Two-way ties in a pod are broken by head-to-head play and the highest seed advances in the event of a three-way tie.
