Sophomores-to-be Heith Hatfield and Drew Martinez have had solid summer campaigns in the Valley League, and their talents have been recognized as the duo was named to the Valley League North Division All-Star Team the league announced. Hosted by Hatfield's Woodstock River Bandits, the game will be played on July 12 with first pitch set for 7:30 p.m.
One of four Woodstock players selected to play in the All-Star Game, Hatfield has been dominant in his four outings this summer. He's been especially effective the last three times he toed the rubber. In those three appearances, Hatfield is 2-0 with 22 strikeouts and a 1.71 ERA in 21 innings of work. For the year, the Bartlett, Tenn., native is 2-1 with a 2.52 ERA in four starts. The right-hander has fanned 24 batters in 25 innings and hold opponents to a .222 clip at the plate. In his last two victories Hatfield was phenomenal, working 16 innings and allowing just one run while striking out 17. Hatfield gave up three runs on four hits and struck out a pair in four innings against Harrisonburg Turks (June 18) and then Fanned 10 and allowed just three hits en route to posting a 6-0 complete-game shutout victory versus Rockridge Rapids on June 24.
Martinez is one of two Luray outfielders and one of six Wranglers players to make the squad. The Tiger centerfielder has carried his offense production into the summer season and ranks third on the team and 15th in the Valley League with a .337 batting average. The southpaw from CBHS has played in a team-high 25 games with 23 starts. He leads Luray in at-bats (104), hits (35), runs scored (23) and stolen bases (14). In addition, Martinez ranks second on the team with a .410 on-base percentage and 12 walks. He rates third with 42 total bases to go with a .404 slugging percentage, 14 RBI and five doubles.
Martinez was also selected to the Valley League's Mid-Atlantic Summer Classic Team that is scheduled to play the All-Star Team from the Cal Ripken, Sr. League at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Md. on July 15.
