Tiger Baseball Set for First Team Practice of Fall Workouts
Sept. 28, 2012
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After five weeks of individual workouts, the University of Memphis baseball team will go through its first team practice of the fall on Sunday at FedExPark.
“I am always excited to start fall practice because it gives us the opportunity to evaluate individual personnel, evaluate where we are as a team and implement all of our offensive and defensive systems,” head coach Daron Schoenrock said. “That’s our three goals going into this and we want to come out of it with some sense of a lineup. We want to come out of it with a solid defense as well.”
Coach Schoenrock has plotted out a fall schedule that takes the Tigers through Nov. 13 with several scrimmages to highlight the slate. The first scrimmage is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 2 at approximately 4 p.m. and the Tigers will scrimmage against on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at approximately 3:45 p.m. All scrimmages are open to the public.
Memphis will welcome all baseball alumni to FedExPark on Saturday, Oct. 6 for an open house and baseball signing session. All alumni will have the opportunity to sign a baseball for use on a wall in the player’s lounge at FedExPark.
“Any time we have an opportunity to reach out to former Tiger players, we are more than glad to,” Schoenrock said. “We elected to do this on a football game day to hopefully get a better turn out from guys that aren’t local. It’s going to be real special to have your name on a wall permanently in the player’s lounge at FedExPark. We want to show this beautiful facility off to the former players.”
Pro scout day is slated for Thursday, Oct. 11 at 2:30 p.m. at FedExPark. The Tigers then shift their sights to parent’s weekend on Oct. 20. Parents and all U of M fans can make a day full of Tigers athletics with the Rookies/Vets game scheduled for 11 a.m. and Memphis football playing UCF at 7 p.m.
The annual Garibaldis series begins on Saturday, Nov. 3 and is scheduled to conclude on Tuesday, Nov. 13. A tentative schedule for scrimmages and the Garibaldi’s series is below. All scrimmages will last five to six innings with each pitcher seeing a maximum of two innings.
Coach Schoenrock plans to use student assistant coach Chase Sain to develop the depth at catcher while T.J. Rich will help mold a first baseman. The Tigers have 18 players listed as pitchers on the 2013 roster with 11 of those being right-handers.
“It’s very convenient to have two student assistants that went through our system at those positions,” Schoenrock said. “They know what we teach and what we expect and those two guys will focus solely on those positions in all the daily work. It’s great to have another set of eyes on the coaching staff on positions guys played in our system. We’re very excited about the work that T.J. (Rich) and Chase (Sain) are doing with our guys.”
