MEMPHIS, Tenn. -
Rookies 000 000 00 - 0 Veterans 024 004 00 - 10
Senior Robby Graham hit for the cycle and drove in four to lead a more experienced Veterans club past the Rookies, 10-0, in Memphis' annual Rookies-Vets Scrimmage, Saturday at FedExPark.
"That's the way I expect a Rookies-Vets game to go," said head Coach Daron Schoenrock. "With the likes of Drew (Martinez), Chad (Zurcher), Jacob (Wilson), Adam (McClain) and Robby (Graham), you have a lot of experienced bats."
Graham was named the Offensive MVP of the game after his four-hit day. The Cordova, Tenn., native blasted a two-run homer in the second and added a single, double and triple in each of his next three at-bats. He drove in a pair with the triple.
After Graham's two-run shot, in the second, the Vets struck for four in the third and four more in the sixth. Chad Zurcher, the team's leading hitter in 2010, banged out a pair of doubles, drove in two and stole two bases in a three-hit day. Drew Martinez added an RBI double for the Vets.
Despite the score, the Rookies never backed down. T.J. Rich, a juco transfer from Middle Georgia College, led the offense with two hits, including a double. Pitchers Blake Myers and Patrick Bailey both faced the minimum in their inning of work.
"I'm impressed with how the Rookies handled the game in spite of the score," Schoenrock said. "I'm excited about the future some of the Rookies have in our program."
The Tigers will hold Pro Scout Day on Thurs., Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. The next formal scrimmage will be the Blue-Gray Scrimmage, which is slated for 10 a.m. on Sat., Oct. 30 at FedExPark.
