Blue/Gray Scrimmage Set for Saturday at FedExPark
Oct. 21, 2011
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis baseball team will continue the fall practice schedule with the annual Blue/Gray intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday at FedExPark. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and admission is free.
"This is another opportunity for our guys to split up into two dugouts and compete in a less controlled environment than a normal scrimmage," head coach Daron Schoenrock said. "This scrimmage gives our coaching staff another chance to evaluate the team. We won't put our projected lineup or rotation together, but we will split them up to as even as possible and let the guys pitch and bat in reverse alphabetical order. Hopefully, we'll have a great day of baseball."
The Blue squad features seven upperclassmen while the Gray team has five upperclassmen. Michael Wills will make the start for the Blue team and Erik Schoenrock starts for the Gray. Saturday's scrimmage will be a nine-inning scrimmage.
"We are finally going to give our offensive coaching staff a chance to run the offense in a scrimmage," Schoenrock said. "Coach (Clay) Greene will run the offense from the third base box and Coach (Zach) Clark will be over at first. Coach (Fred) Corral will coach both teams' pitchers and help the guys make the necessary adjustments. Student assistant coach (Chase) Sain will handle the catchers. We can really do some fine-tuned teaching in a game environment having the staff coach like this."
Saturday's scrimmage is the final nine-inning scrimmage before the annual Garibaldi's Series gets underway on Saturday, Nov. 5.
