MEMPHIS, Tenn. -
Head Coach Daron Schoenrock and his University of Memphis baseball squad will host the second of a series of fall scrimmages with the annual Rookies vs. Vets game on Saturday, Oct. 27. First pitch for the nine-inning affair will be at 1 p.m. at Nat Buring Stadium.
Schoenrock and his staff have split the roster as evenly as possible in hopes of a competitive contest. However, under the guidance of assistant coaches Michael Federico and Jerry Zulli, the Vets are again heavily favored. In Schoenrock's coaching career, the Veterans hold an 18-1-1 mark over the first-year players. The Rookies only win came in the 2004 game, when the Tiger newcomers bested the Veterans 15-9.
Federico and Zulli's bunch showcases 19 returning players, including the likes of outfielders K.K. Chalmers and Tyler Huelsing, as well as catcher Chris Kirkland and pitchers Dylan Cupples, Garrett Hachtel, Brennon Martin, Scott McGregor, Neil Schenk and closer Matt Yokley.
Led by assistant coach
Cory Barton, the Rookie side will be led by sophomore catcher
Chase Sain, sophomore pitcher
Chris Novikoff and senior righthander Duke Williams. Despite it youth, Barton's lineup will the one full of talent with freshmen Adam McClain, Tyler Roberts and Chad Zurcher on the infield. A highly-touted group of newcomers will join Novikoff and Williams on the mound. Former South-Doyle High standouts Chad Bell and Ryan Holland, along with local talents Jonathan Jones and Worth Tate will look to help the Rookies post its second win since Schoenrock's arrival at Memphis.
The Rookies-Vets game is the final scrimmage before the Garibaldi's Series that concludes fall workouts.
