Memphis Signs Cookeville High School Outfielder Darien Tubbs
Nov. 20, 2012
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Cookeville High School standout Darien Tubbs has signed his National Letter of Intent (NLI) to join the Tigers baseball team in 2014, head coach Daron Schoenrock announced Tuesday.
“Darien possesses all of the skills you look for in a leadoff hitter and centerfielder,” Schoenrock said. “He is a dynamic base stealer and he will use his speed, both offensively and defensively, very well and that will impact our program immediately. Darien is a great athlete with polished baseball skills and we are excited to see his career at Memphis unfold.”
The 5-foot-10 centerfielder is a three-year letterwinner at Cookeville High School and he owns the school record for stolen bases. Last season, Tubbs helped the squad to a 37-5-1 season and he recorded 47 steals on 49 attempts. Tubbs sported a .457 batting average with 13 doubles, four triples a home run and 41 runs scored. He hauled in numerous accolades including Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association (TBCA) All-State, 2nd Team All-Mid State, All-Region and All-District honors.
Tubbs is the son of former Cincinnati Reds major leaguer Greg Tubbs. Darien is the fifth of six signees announced by Schoenrock.
