Memphis will field a 2014 squad that features 11 newcomers. introduces you to freshman left-handed pitcher Ryan Garner as part of the Around the Horn series of question and answers with newcomers.

Garner is a freshman from Dyer, Tenn., where he played for University School of Jackson during his prep days.

Question 1: Why did you choose to play for the Tigers?

Ryan: I really thought this was the place for me to be. I had a really good connection with Coach (Daron) Schoenrock and all the other coaches.

Question 2:  What's been the biggest adjustment you've had to make to the college game?

Ryan: Probably the biggest adjustment has been getting used to the speed of the game. For me as a pitcher, hitters are a lot stronger and I have to be better with my pitches.

Question 3: Whose your favorite MLB player, and why?

Ryan: I'm a Cardinals fan. I'll go with David Freese. He's a pretty clutch player.

Question 4: If you didn't play baseball, what sport would you choose to play, and why?

Ryan: In high school, I was a quarterback. I was a pretty good punter so I think I would make it better punting than playing quarterback.

Question 5: What's your favorite thing to do when you're not on the field?

Ryan: Hanging out with the rest of the freshmen around the dorm. Since we've been here, we're usually tired all the time so we like to take advantage of the free time.

Question 6: What is your favorite restaurant in Memphis?

Ryan: Ching's (Hot Wings) is always good. Central BBQ. We don't have much money so we have to eat pretty cheap. Those two usually work pretty well.

Question 7: How did you get started playing baseball?

Ryan: I think I started playing when I was four. My dad never really made me do it. I was just a kind of thing I started doing and had fun doing so I kept going and it got me here.

Question 8: What's your favorite TV show?

Ryan: I'm a Family Guy person and probably That `70s Show.

Question 9: What would be your favorite walkup song?

Ryan: It would probably be a hip hop song.

Question 10: Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions?

Ryan: Not really. I'm pretty laid back so I just go out there and do it.

Question 11: What country would you most like to visit?

Ryan: I'd like to go to Italy sometime or anywhere in Europe. Everything over there seems like it's pretty unique.

Question 12: What parts of your game are you trying to improve?

Ryan: Working on all my pitches and trying to improve them as much as I can. Being here I know that everybody is going to be a lot better than they were at the previous level.

Question 13: What's your favorite thing about Memphis?

Ryan: I love the people here. Everybody is really easy to get along with. Everybody is friendly and will take you in as if you've known them forever.

Question 14: What's one thing your teammates would be surprised to know about you?

Ryan: They were actually surprised to find out that I was a quarterback in high school. I'm not the biggest guy. When we throw the football around and I say I was a quarterback, they never believe me.

Question 15: Who is the guy in the clubhouse that keeps it most upbeat?

Ryan: There's two guys probably for me. Darien Tubbs for sure and Ford Wilson gets everybody going.
