Dexter Reed came to then Memphis State University from Little Rock, Arkansas, in the fall of 1973 and became one of the most popular guards in Tiger basketball history. The prep All-American became an immediate starter for the basketball squad and scored over 500 points as a freshman.
He amassed 1,678 career points and was ranked as the school's fourth all-time leading scorer when he completed his career. Reed was named the MVP of the first Metro Conference Basketball Tournament and was an all-tournament and all-conference selection in 1977.
He ended his career being named to the 1977 Converse and The Sporting News All-America teams. Reed returned to the University in 1989 and completed his degree work. He was hired at the University of Memphis to work in the Minority Business Office and later left the school to work for the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau.
