Hunter Beckman came to the University of Memphis to play basketball under head coach Bob Vanatta in the fall of 1960 after an outstanding prep career in Troy, Missouri. Little did anyone know that Beckman would become just the third player in Tiger basketball history to reach 1,000 career points.
He had six games in which he scored 30 or more points including a career high against Centenary in 1962-63. His 57% shooting from the field in 1961-62 ranked fifth in the nation among collegiate basketball players. Beckman was voted the team's Most Valuable Player as a junior and again in his senior season and received honorable mention all-America honors in 1961 and 1962.
Following graduation, he was drafted by the Cincinnati Royals but opted to join the Goodyear Tire Company Management Training Group. While playing on Goodyear's National AAU Championship team, Beckman was selected to play on the 1964 Olympic team.
