Opening Statement:

UCF played well and it was one of those games where we were not as sharp as we needed to be in certain areas. We were out rebounded and it hurt us in the long run. I was glad we were able to make some free throws down the stretch. 18 assists on 27 made field goals was a positive. Chris Crawford hit a big three in the second half that changed the momentum. David Pellom came up with some loose balls as well. We found a way to win the game, it was not pretty but it counts in the win column.

On the team’s ability to win:

David Pellom gave us some great minutes, despite his knee acting up during the last couple of weeks. Shaq Goodwin had his hands full tonight guarding UCF’s Justin McBride but was able to get some quality rebounds. Austin Nichols woke up this morning with the stomach bug, so he did not get to play as many minutes as we would have liked him to. We had the right guys step up and we were able to get the win. We protected the home stand, which we had to do heading into the Connecticut game.

On UCF’s play:

We took some bad shots that allowed them to go down the court and make some threes. We could not shake them and finish the game on a positive note. They (UCF) are better than their record on paper and they are going to upset someone else.  I am just glad that it was not us.

On tonight’s game:

We did not stick to the game plan as well as we should have. A win is a win and we will take it any way we can. We did not carry over our progress in the first half into the second half and UCF took advantage of it. They hustled more than us and were able to get more rebounds than us. It felt great to be able to play more minutes and my knee felt great. For me, it is about getting back into the routine of things now.

Memphis senior guard Michael Dixon Jr.

On tonight’s game:

We did a good job defensively on the ball screens and the way we handled them. We had to make changes halfway through the game. We were able to make them take hard shots. Isaiah Sykes is a great player and we knew that we have to shut him down offensively. He made a lot of shots against us in Orlando, so we knew what to expect and how to slow him down a little more.

  Memphis sophomore forward Shaq Goodwin

On tonight’s game:

Every game is tough and we know that we cannot afford to play poorly against anyone. We got out rebounded but were able to hold them off for the win. They were able to get a lot of offensive rebounds and took advantage of that.

  UCF Head Coach Donnie Jones

Opening Statement:

I think there were 50 second chances that really changed the momentum tonight. We’d miss a layup and they’d hit a three, or we’d give up the second chance layup. You’ve got to take advantage of those things and we didn’t. They had a couple runs that they made against us, but we battled back and got ourselves right back in the game. I’m proud of these kids. There were a lot of great efforts today from our team, I love the way they’re cheering for each other. The way they’re in the locker room talking to each other. There are things that don’t show up in the win column. There are a lot of good things to look at, we just have to get a jumpstart. I’m really proud of how these guys continue to play.

On keeping the game close throughout:

We just continued to push it, play how we usually do. We’re just trying to get where we don’t have so many empty possessions. I thought we pushed the ball hard, I thought we attacked, did a good job at getting on the glass. We got stops which helped lead to runs, we just have to keep working on that.

On the late Memphis run in the second half:

They hit a three and that’s what good teams do. Then we missed, we come down and foul, they miss the free throws and get those offensive rebounds and before you know it it’s an 8-0 run and we’re trying to catch up.
