Opening Statement:

Temple is a very good team, and they have some good guys on the perimeter. We let their (Temple) individual guys hurt us a lot, and we have got to be able to stop them. We had some great defensive possessions but it was not enough because of how well they played. Austin Nichols deserves a lot of credit for his performance. He had seven blocks out there tonight, and was a beast. Nichols added 12 rebounds, and pulled each one down with two hands. Shaq Goodwin was very good in the second half, once he got back into the swing of things. Joe Jackson shared the ball really well, and set up some effective plays. Geron Johnson came through in the second half with some great defense, which gave us the ball back in overtime. We got the win, and Temple is a great team.  It was a great overtime win, and we found a way to get the win. The American is a great conference, and this game proves that every opponent is tough.

On Temple’s performance:

Temple is a great team, and will be even better next year. They have one senior they will miss but should be preseason ranked pretty high in the American Conference. Temple also had four guys out that will be back. They are a young team with a lot of talent. I am glad we were able to pull out the win and we will move onto the next one.

Memphis senior guard Michael Dixon Jr.

On tonight’s victory:

Temple has a trio of guards and they play free and I mean, they played well tonight and we were just fortunate to stop them when we needed to and come out with the win.

On Austin Nichols and Shaq Goodwin:

Shaq and Austin, they’re our big guys, they’re who we depend on, they finished when we needed them to, they made hustle plays and had six or seven blocks. That’s the kind of stuff that we need in order to be successful and they came through and stepped up for us.

  Memphis sophomore forward Shaq Goodwin

On getting the victory tonight:

Temple is a good team. They had a good game plan coming in and it just came down to the wire and we got the win.

On the final stretch of games in the regular season:

We’re treating this like our own little championship series, like Final Four, Elite Eight, whatever, so we’re taking each game as the most important game. So the next game is Houston and we’re looking forward to that one.

On closing out the game:

They went on a run toward the end of the last couple minutes of the game to send it to overtime, but we came out and got stops and getting the win at the end and we executed perfectly, so we’ll take it.

  Memphis freshman forward Austin Nichols

On his performance tonight:

I was hitting some shots, getting some blocks, getting some rebounds, so I just kind of went with it. Growing up, I’ve always been the taller kid, I’ve been blocking shots pretty much my whole life. To do it on the collegiate level is definitely a step up and I’m definitely going to continue to try and do it.

On his freshman season so far:

I look at myself as a freshman, maybe getting a few minutes off the bench. But the way the season has played out, I’m extremely blessed and I just got to keep getting some of those games like I had tonight.

  Memphis senior guard Chris Crawford

On tonight’s victory:

Temple, they’re a great team. They’ve got great scorers and we had a lot of meltdowns on the defensive end. Our game plan, we didn’t execute it sometimes, but they have great players and they’re well-coached and they made some tough shots on us. We just came out and found a way to win.

Winning is the most important thing. That’s two we got, we’ve got four games left. The next one on the schedule is Houston. That’s a must-win on the road for us, we’ve just got to come well-prepared and have a good game plan and execute.

  Temple Head Coach Fran Dunphy

On the end of regulation and overtime:

We had some miscues at the end and threw a couple balls away. We could have also made a better decision on that last shot in regulation. We just forced it a little bit there. Then, we had our chances in overtime to win.

On his team’s effort tonight:

The spirit of our team to hang in the game was great. We are a spirited group. We came into a great environment tonight. Memphis really has it going on here, so I was proud of our guys. I would have been even more proud if we could have found a way to win.

On defending Shaq Goodwin and Austin Nichols:

We could have done a better job defensively inside (on Shaq Goodwin and Austin Nichols). We made a couple of mistakes that hurt us inside.
