EL PASO, Texas - After Memphis took a 12-9 lead seven minutes into the game, UTEP closed the half on a 24-8 run to seize control of the game as the Miners defeated the Tigers 74-47 Saturday afternoon at the Don Haskins Center.

Memphis cut the lead to 41-33 at the 14:46 mark of the second half after back-to-back layups from Tarik Black, but UTEP countered with a 13-1 run to take a 54-34 lead with 7:16 to play. After Black's layup at the 14:46 mark, the Tigers went 10:02 without a field goal until a dunk by Will Coleman with 2:44 to play.

Memphis natives Randy Culpepper and Jeremy Williams led UTEP with 20 points and 14 points, respectively as the Miners defeated the Tigers in El Paso for the first time since the 1971-72 season. John Nohannon also added 15 points of the bench for the Miners, who shot 26-of-53 (49.1 percent) from the floor, including 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from long range.

Will Barton was the only Memphis player to finish in double figures, scoring 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting in 21 minutes, while Tarik Black added eight points and seven rebounds.

Joe Jackson, who scored the first five points of the game for the Tigers, finished with eight points before fouling out. Charles Carmouche and Antonio Barton each finished with five points and two rebounds in the Tigers' worst loss of the season.

Memphis committed a season-high 22 turnovers which UTEP turned into 22 points. Both teams struggled from the free throw line, with the Tigers going 12-of-21 (57.1 percent) and the Miners making 16-of-29 (55.2 percent). Memphis had just eight assists to its 22 turnovers, the worst assist-turnover ratio of the season.,
