MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Dajuan Wagner had 24 points and nine assists to lead Memphis to an 80-69 victory over Brigham Young on Wednesday night in the second round of the NIT.
Wagner made nine of his first 14 shots to help Memphis (24-9) advance to a third-round game Saturday at home against Tennessee Tech.
Mark Bigelow and Travis Hansen each scored 17 points for BYU (18-12). Daniel Bobik had 15 points, connecting on all five of his shots from the field, including 4-of-4 from 3-point range.
Memphis took control in the first half with a 15-2 run that put the Tigers up 22-9 with 12:31 left. Memphis eventually extended the lead to 20 at 34-14.
Wagner had 15 at the half and Burks had 11 as Memphis shot 50 percent from the field.
Memphis maintained the double-digit advantage early in the second half, but the Cougars steadily whittled away, cutting it to nine twice before the 11-minute mark, and eventually trailing by seven, 65-58 when Bigelow hit two free throws with 8:39 left.
But the Tigers went on a 6-1 to build the lead back to 12 with 4:26 to go,
and BYU never got it under double figures the rest of the way.
