Memphis vs. Nicholls Postgame Quotes
Nov. 23, 2013
I like how we started off the game, and I liked that we had 52 points in the paint. I thought Austin Nichols did a great job finishing around the hoop. I thought our guards did a good job finding him. I love the stat 22 assists on 31 made field goals. That was important for us. We had a good rebound margin (+14). We only had 12 turnovers in the game, which was good for us. We obviously have to make our free throws. We have to have those guys step up and make shots at the free throw line. It is a mental thing to step up and do your job.
On Joe Jackson's performance:
Joe did great from the free throw line. He really stepped up and made them. I am really proud of Joe. He was 14-of-15 from the free throw line, and he did good things for us. We shot well from the three point line as well. Michael Dixon was 3-of-3 (from the arc). Chris Crawford had some good looks, and he stepped up in other places.
On the team's patience on offense:
I didn't think we forced the ball a lot during the game. The first half we did a little, but the second half, we really moved the ball well. We did a good job not trying to get it all at once. We are a better team when we get the ball swung from side to side. We have to try to get the ball inside and keep attacking.
On finishing the game with 22 assists:
I love the fact that we had 22 assists on 31 made field goals. I like the fact that we won both halves. We did not let our foot off the pedal the whole game.
On defending Nicholls senior guard Dantrell Thomas:
Chris Crawford did a good job with his defensive play on him throughout the game. Our defense, as a whole, played together, and we made switches throughout the game on him. We did a good job locking him down. We just have to trust our process and continue to get better. It is always nice to get a win. Coming off getting our butt kicked the other night, it is nice to come back (with a win). Everyone is always a bit up tight. It was good to come back and get a good win and look forward to our trip to Orlando.
On Austin Nichols:
He has great hands, and he can score on the lower block. He just has to continue to get stronger. I was proud of him for his play out there.
On getting the ball inside more tonight:
When we looked at the game against Oklahoma State, we saw that we didn't start inside-out. Teams that scout us focus on the guards, and there are no lanes. We've got to play inside-out and use our weapons inside so the game can open up for everyone.
On bouncing back from the Oklahoma State game:
Coming out tonight, I was just trying to not be in a funk, no matter what it took.
On scoring in the paint and getting the ball inside:
We are just doing our job, getting the ball inside first. Just staying the course, like Coach Pastner always says. We're just going to keep getting better every day. That's was our main focus going into the game, and we executed.
On five players scoring in double figures:
We're just doing what we can. Just stay the course with the team. It's all about the team, and that's what we're focused on.
On his team's performance tonight:
I was pleased with some things that happened within the game, but obviously there were too many things that we didn't do well. I thought there was a telling moment in the first half after we wobbled at the start, and then re-grouped and made a little run. We cut it to nine just under the eight-minute media (timeout). We decided were going to run with Memphis in transition, and we went from being down nine to being down 18, and the game slipped away from us there. When we got them out of transition and into half-court we defended well. We can't simulate that speed in transition (in our practices). There's no way to prepare for that.
