Memphis vs. Northwestern State Postgame Quotes
Dec. 7, 2013
No. 16/15 Memphis (6-1) 96, Northwestern State (3-4) 76
"First off, we do not take any wins for granted. It was a great win and we are very thankful for the win. I thought we had a good first half for the most part. We had 17 assists on 21 made field goals. I was proud of our guys on that. Second half, we did not do so well. You have to give Northwestern State credit. They are a good team. They are well coached and have good players. We did not come out the second half with as much focus defensively but we did a good job limiting them in the second half, which was good. It's a good win especially with finals going on so it was good to get the win."
On late run to end 1st half:
"We did a good job defensively during that run and rebounds really were key during that stretch. It was a good win and I thought that everyone contributed. I want to give a shout out to the crowd. We had a great crowd today. I think 2,300 took advantage of the free tickets. Overall, with everyone that had season tickets anyway, it was a great crowd. It shows you how big basketball is here and to this city. It means a lot to this city. I thought the crowd was outstanding considering the weather and everything else. So, great win and we will take it. We move to 6-1."
On holding Northwestern State to 40% shooting:
"Overall we did a pretty good job defensively. I would like for us to have less turnovers. That was the big thing. We had 17 turnovers but I thought everyone played well. We had Kuran Iverson, Nick King and Damien Wilson out there. We had Kuran out there running the point with everything that happened."
"I was told Chris Crawford had nothing more than an ankle sprain. He over jumped the pass and I did not want him to do that. He sprained his ankle so the doctor and trainer Brad Anderson told us it was just a sprain. I thought David Pellom had a great game and gave us good minutes. He was just solid. Coming off that knee injury I think he is back to where he want to be. I think after this week he is fully healthy."
On inside play:
"Our emphasis has been trusting the process and getting better but I think we did good and got the ball inside where wanted to a lot today. I think some guys missed a couple easy lay ups but it happens, it's shots we see them make all the time. I think the big guys played well and I think it was a great team effort."
On the team's effort this afternoon:
"I think we got the ball inside the past 3 or 4 games well and that's something we emphasis on and I think guard haven't been playing bad, it's just something we have been trying to do. Trust our process, we do well and win ball games."
On playing against an up-tempo team like Northwestern State:
"It makes it fun. At the same time, we have to get back on defense and be great in transition on defense. The coaches are all talking about when we score, we have to get back down because they are pushing the ball right down our throats but we did an okay job, something we have to work on."
On scoring a career-high 21 points:
"Just being in the right place at the right time. Coming in the floor, producing energy and working with Austin and the other bigs, we play well together. It make sense, the new sets they are bringing in, it just works well."
On today's performance:
"I felt real good. Especially the first half, we held them to 29 points. The second half we held them off a little bit but we are just happy with the defense."
On moving the ball and finishing with 27 assists:
"We've been preaching for the last couple of weeks, one more; just get the ball to the open man."
On the team's mindset:
"Our coaching staff they stayed on us the whole week of not falling off because what happened last week, today it doesn't matter. "
"We kept taking the ball to the bucket, but we couldn't make shots. Memphis just kept getting run-outs. But, I think we did a good job in the second half. I think we won the second half. We didn't quit."
On the progression of the team's depth:
"I don't think there's any doubt there. You know one guy who is getting better, and I think we need to do a better job of getting him involved, is Marvin Frazier. He finished with six rebounds, two blocks and two steals."
On takeaway from today's game:
"I felt like we competed. One area of concern is our three-point defense. We were there on a lot of those [three-point attempts by Memphis], but we just didn't contest the shots well enough."
