Memphis vs. UALR Postgame Quotes
Dec. 13, 2013
No. 16/15 Memphis (7-1) 73, UALR (3-6) 59
"Again, I love every win and we do not take it for granted. I was just disappointed with our preparation in that first half. I thought we did not go along with the process we have trusted thus far. We did not play simple basketball. I love our guys, but we cannot play like we did in that first half.
Arkansas-Little Rock kicked out butt for most of the game, so you have to give them credit. Fortunately, we found a way to win the game, so I am happy about that in the end. I am always telling the guys that they cannot take any possession for granted. If our four senior guards play like they did in the first half, then that is how it is going to be all season long. When they are playing well, we are really good. When they are not playing well, we cannot win. We are counting on those guys to step up every possession.
It is not an individual thing, all of them collectively need to step up together. Even if one is off someone else needs to step up. All of them were poor in that first half and that cannot happen. I am putting the eggs in their basket to get the job done. There is not a backup plan with them. They have to produce every night they take the floor. If all four have an off night, it makes it very hard to win. Those four did a better job in the second half and we won the game.
On sticking with four senior guards late in second half:
"Joe Jackson hit a big three and Michael Dixon Jr. hit some big free throws in that second half to really get us going. Chris Crawford and Geron Johnson both made some plays late to give us a boost, but we were in that situation late in that game because our lack of preparation. When I say preparation, I mean them being mentally ready to go and play. For the last 72 hours, all I talked about was how ready they have to be and hopefully that will be a wake-up call for those who did not play well tonight."
On how the Trojans played tonight:
"I’m really proud of our effort. I think we had good focus coming in, and we had good intensity together. I thought we moved the basketball very well. Unfortunately for us, we started the game up on rebounds, but finished the first half down, and then we got beat by six in the second half. We had an opportunity to extend the lead in a 3-on-1 situation in the second half, and we weren’t able to capitalize on that and I believe Memphis went on a (big) run after that. I thought overall our guys gave great effort, and they played extremely hard. I thought they played well together especially with the ball movement on the court."
On playing in this environment:
"Obviously, it is a very tough place to play. We’ve played six of our first nine games on the road and five teams that made the tournament last year. That will help us down the road, but it is a tough task to ask of these guys. I thought we handled the press better in the first half than the second. We weren’t able to foul the right guys at the end and that hurt us down the stretch."
