It was a grind out game; there is no question about that. That type of game is like the one you get in conference play, like when we are playing at Southern Miss or Tulane. It's not a pretty game; it's an ugly, back and forth game. But, we found ways to grind it out and get the W. And, Charlotte is a good team.
I thought our zone did some good things, especially field goal percentage wise. They started hitting some shots at the end, so we went back to man. The biggest thing is we outrebounded them total, but they had 21 offensive rebounds. We're getting better on overall rebounds, but they are still getting too many opportunities. And, then 16 turnovers are just too many. We were also 19-of-25 from the free throw line. That's a big thing.
Talk about the offense rebounds.
Well, we had 13 blocks. Does it count as a rebound after the block? If you look at our last two games, I think part of it is our blocks. They are picking up the ball and getting an offensive rebound. Yeah, it gets you a little out of it. But, we have to find a way to come up with those 50-50 balls. I was proud of our blocks, no question.
Which players stood out?
Ferrakohn Hall gave us great energy. He had some big man rebounds with two hands and two feet as Coach (Jimmy) Williams always emphasizes. Tarik Black made big free throws, 6-of-8. Coach Williams has spent some good time with him working on that. D.J. Stephens came in and gave a great energy game. He missed a couple short ones, but had great energy. Tarik probably would have had more points, but he had a couple go in and out. We have to keep working on those. He really stepped up and made big free throws. I thought Will Barton was okay, but okay is a double-double. Stan Simpson came in and gave us good minutes. Charles Carmouche came in and hit two big threes. Chris Crawford hit a big shot in the corner. Adonis Thomas came and did some good things. It wasn't one of his better games. This game is going to help him when conference play gets around. This is the first time he's seen a game like this. I have to give a shout out to my man Antonio Barton. He was really good again tonight. He was terrific and hit big shots. It was a good team win.

Memphis just sends bodies to the rim and tries not to let you get there. To their credit, they blocked a lot of shots.
I thought we played hard enough to win, in terms of effort, but obviously we didn’t shoot the ball well.
Only 10 turnovers for us, which is clearly good enough to win, and we stole the ball 10 times. It just came down to continuing to get quality shots. We have got to continue to get better in terms of execution and making the extra pass. And we have improved in that area, some. But against teams like this with such length, they will continue to test you.
About Memphis’ defensive approach
They recover very quickly. They do a good job of not letting you get to the rim. They really didn’t care who ended up closing out on whom, they just did a good job of recovering. I know that they have had a little adversary in terms of their line-up, but tonight they did a very good job.
On attacking Memphis and holding them below their season average in points, particularly Will Barton
We just tried to keep them off balance. They are pretty good when they can get in a rhythm, in terms of driving the ball. They still ended up with 26 points in the paint, but that is less than what they have been getting (throughout the season). We tried to mix it up between zone and man, but guys like him (Will Barton) are so athletic that you just have to try to limit the chances that he has to get to the rim.
Hey, I’ll give Antonio (Barton) credit, he made some big plays, and if we limited him, we were right there in a one point game, with limited time down the stretch.
