Feb. 17, 2008
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - University of Memphis' Chris Douglas-Roberts was named collegehoops.net national Player of the Week for Feb. 12-18, the web site announced late Sunday night. Douglas-Roberts is the first Conference USA player to earn the web site's weekly accolade.
In the two wins over Houston and UAB last week, the 6-foot-7 junior guard averaged 27.0 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 58.8 percent from the field and 68.8 percent from the free throw line.
Against the Cougars, Douglas-Roberts scored 22 points and grabbed six boards. He also had three assists, two blocks and two steals versus the Cougars. Douglas-Roberts scored the first four points of the second half to turn a 35-37 deficit into a 39-37 lead, and the Tigers did not trail the rest of the contest.
In the thrilling 79-78 victory over UAB, the Detroit, Mich., native netted 32 points and pulled down seven rebounds in 36 minutes of action. He also had two assists, one block and no turnovers. The 32-point performance was his best in C-USA play, and was one point shy of tying his career high (33 points versus Connecticut). Douglas-Roberts scored the Tigers' final six points versus UAB, including the game-winning three-point play with :06.5 seconds left.
For the season, Douglas-Roberts is averaging 17.5 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 54.4 percent from the field, 45.6 percent from the arc and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe. He is ranked among Conference USA leaders in scoring (6th), field goal percentage (7th) and three-point field goal percentage (1st).
Douglas-Roberts was named to both the Wooden Award and Naismith Trophy mid-season lists in January. He was selected C-USA Player of the Week twice in November.
The Tigers (25-0, 11-0 C-USA) return to action Feb. 20 with a league road game at Tulane (15-9, 5-5 C-USA). The game, to be televised by CSTV, is slated for a 7:00 p.m. (CT) start.
