Johnson Dunk Vs. Houston Up For Geico Play Of The Year
Feb. 24, 2014
CHICAGO, Ill. -University of Memphis senior guard Geron Johnson's break-away, off-the-backboard slam against Houston Jan. 23 has been nominated for the GEICO Play of the Year, Intersport announced Monday.
Each week for eight weeks, four incredible college basketball plays are nominated as the GEICO Play of the Year. Each week's winner is determined by fan voting through the official Facebook page (facebook.com/BestofCollegeBasketball).
The eight finalists then compete in a week-long competition to determine the GEICO Play of the Year. The winner is announced during the GEICO Best of College Basketball special, which airs March 29 at 1 p.m. (CT) on CBS.
With 10:11 left in the first half in the Jan. 23 game against Houston, Chris Crawford received a break-away pass from a teammate and ran it down to the basket. Crawford threw it off the backboard for an alley-oop pass to Geron Johnson, who slammed it down. The Tigers defeated the Cougars 82-59.
Johnson's break-away, off-the-backboard slam is competing against three other plays from Week Seven, including a reverse dunk by Illinois' Joseph Bertrand, a game-winning jumper by Penn State's D.J. Newbill, and a 75-foot game-winning shot by Sacramento State's Dylan Garrity.
