March 13, 2009
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - University of Memphis' Tyreke Evans has been named The Sporting News National Freshman of the Year, the magazine announced on Friday. It is the third National Freshman of the Year honor for Evans, who also received the same accolade from FoxSports.com and CBSSports.com earlier this week.
The Sporting News selected Evans to its Freshman All-America team. Joining Evans on the squad were Wake Forest's Al-Farouq Aminu, Georgetown's Greg Monroe, Washington's Isaiah Thomas and Oklahoma's Willie Warren.
On Thursday, Evans was named to the 2008-09 Wooden Award final ballot, and is the only freshman on the ballot for the National Player of the Year honor. Evans is also a finalist for the 2008-09 Oscar Robertson Trophy and is the lone freshman among the finalists for that honor.
The awards are piling up for the 6-foot-6 guard. This week, Evans was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year and earned All-C-USA first team distinction. Evans was also selected to the USBWA All-District 4 Team and the NABC All-District 11 first team. CBSSports.com also selected him to its Freshman All-America first team and All-America third team.
Evans leads the Tigers in scoring (16.8 ppg) and steals (67). He is averaging 5.5 rebounds and 3.7 assists, while shooting 44.9 percent from the field and 70.7 percent from the free throw line. The nine-time Conference USA Rookie of the Week is ranked among the league leaders in scoring (7th), rebounding (12th), field goal percentage (10th), assists (9th) and steals (2nd).
The Chester, Pa., native is ranked third on the Memphis all-time freshmen steals list with 67 swipes. He is also fifth on the Tiger all-time freshman scoring chart with 539 points.
The Tigers (29-3), ranked No. 4 in the Associated Press poll and No. 3 in the ESPN/USA Today poll, returns to action Friday in the C-USA Tournament semifinals. Memphis faces Houston (21-10) in a 3 p.m. (CT) semifinal game at FedExForum. CBS College Sports (Comcast cable channel 222) will televise the contest.
