Tigers Hoops Signees King, Iverson To Compete In 3-Point, Dunk Contests

CHICAGO, Ill. - University of Memphis basketball signees Nick King and Kuran Iverson both are scheduled to compete in the 2013 American Family Insurance High School Slam Dunk and Three-Point Championships during NCAA Final Four weekend in Atlanta, Intersport announced Thursday. King is competing in the U.S. Marines Three-Point Championship, while Iverson is participating in the American Family Insurance Slam Dunk Championship.
The American Family Insurance High School Slam Dunk and Three-Point Championships are being held at Long Forum on the campus of Greater Atlanta Christian School.
The third-annual event, which showcases the dunking and shooting talents of 16 of the nation's top high school seniors, airs at 1 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, Apr. 6 on CBS. The CBS broadcast team includes Tim Brando, Bill Raftery and Lewis Johnson. The program will have numerous encore presentations on the CBS Sports Network. Check local listings for dates and times.
Memphis, Kansas and Michigan are the only three universities to have two signees in the championships. The Tigers, though, are the only program to have a participant in each competition. Kansas' and Michigan's signees all are in the three-point championship only.
King, who signed with Memphis in November, was recently named Tennessee's Class AAA Mr. Basketball. The 6-foot-7 guard/forward averaged 24.4 points, 15.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.3 blocks in 2012-13. He also shot 62 percent from the field and 82 percent from the free throw line.
In 2011-12, King was selected The Commercial Appeal's Player of the Year after leading the Mustangs to the Tennessee Class AAA state title. The Memphis, Tenn., native finished his high school career with more than 1,900 points and 1,000 rebounds.
Iverson, who also signed with the Tigers in November, averaged 17.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists for Fishburne Military School in 2012-13. He also shot over 50 percent from the field and over 30 percent from the three-point arc. The 6-foot-9 forward helped lead Fishburne to a 27-7 overall record and a National Prep Championship quarterfinal appearance.
The Windsor, Conn., native recently was selected to play in the 2013 Jordan Brand Classic. Iverson is a member of the East All-Star roster in the Classic, which is scheduled for Apr. 13 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The Jordan Brand Classic will air live on ESPN2.
