Memphis Hoops Releases 2012-13 Schedule
July 27, 2012
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The 2012-13 hoops campaign is just over four months from tipping off, but Tiger Nation can fill in its calendar now, as the University of Memphis released its entire schedule Friday. Game times and television selections are to be announced at a later date.
Eleven non-league contests at FedExForum, including those versus Louisville, Harvard and Ohio, and road games at Tennessee and Xavier highlight the Tigers slate. Memphis opens its final Conference USA season at home against East Carolina Jan. 8 or 9, depending upon the arena's availability.
Memphis also is scheduled to play in the second-annual Battle 4 Atlantis Nov. 22-24 on Paradise Island in The Bahamas. Joining the Tigers in the tournament field are Duke, Louisville, Minnesota, Missouri, Northern Iowa, Stanford and VCU. Memphis hosts a Battle 4 Atlantis opening game versus Samford at FedExForum Nov. 17.
In all, the Tigers play 10 non-league foes that participated in the 2012 postseason (NCAA or NIT). Memphis will battle three 2012 postseason squads in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, as all eight participants played in last season's NCAA Tournament or NIT. Duke, Louisville, Missouri and VCU all joined Memphis in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, while Minnesota, Northern Iowa and Stanford earned 2012 NIT berths. Stanford defeated Minnesota in the NIT title game.
Memphis also faces 2012 postseason foes Harvard (NCAA), Louisville (NCAA), Loyola, Md. (NCAA), Ohio (NCAA), Oral Roberts (NIT), Tennessee (NIT) and Xavier (NCAA). Louisville advanced to the 2012 NCAA Final Four, while Ohio and Xavier made NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances.
The Tigers tip off the 2012-13 regular season Nov. 12 against North Florida at FedExForum, before hosting Samford Nov. 17 in the Battle 4 Atlantis opening game.
After returning from The Bahamas, Memphis opens a seven-game homestand that runs from Nov. 29 through Dec. 30. The 2012-13 seven-straight home games ties the 2008-09 seven-game homestand as the longest since the 1979-80 campaign. The 1979-80 squad played nine-consecutive home games during one stretch of that campaign.
Memphis' seven-straight home contests keeps the Tigers in the Bluff City the entire month of December. The seven-game homestand starts Nov. 29 versus Tennessee Martin and continues throughout December with contests against Ohio Dec. 5, Austin Peay Dec. 8, Louisville Dec. 15, Lipscomb Dec. 20, Oral Roberts Dec. 28 and Loyola, Md., Dec. 30.
The Tigers close their non-league home slate with a mid-January date against Ivy League power Harvard Jan. 19.
Memphis' two non-conference road games pop up on the schedule after the calendar turns to 2013. The Tigers travel to Knoxville, Tenn., Jan. 4 to meet in-state rival Tennessee. Then, in late February, Memphis faces Xavier in Cincinnati Feb. 26.
After hosting their C-USA opener versus East Carolina Jan. 8/9, the Tigers play their league road opener at longtime rival UAB Jan. 12. Memphis' final Conference USA campaign is slated like the previous two seasons (2010-11, 2011-12), with the Tigers playing all East Division schools (East Carolina, Marshall, Southern Miss, UAB, UCF) home-and-home and meeting the West Division programs (Houston, Rice, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa, UTEP) once. Houston, Tulane and Tulsa all make visits to FedExForum, while Memphis travels to Rice, SMU and UTEP.
Memphis closes its era in Conference USA at the league's postseason tournament Mar. 13-16 at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla.
The Tigers host Christian Brothers in their lone exhibition at FedExForum. The exhibition game date is Nov. 7 or 8, again depending upon the arena's availability.
