Memphis, Tenn. - The University of Memphis opened basketball drills with the first of two practices Saturday.

First-year coach John Calipari put his squad through a two-and-a-half hour workout Saturday morning with the Tigers returning for a second practice later in the day.

"I thought this team worked hard and was very attentive," Calipari said.

The Tigers were able to move through several drills at a quick pace, thanks in part to the team's four-player workouts earlier this fall. However, Saturday's practice was the first since Calipari was named the head coach in March he could focus on teaching to the entire team.

The U of M's first practice focused on a theme which will be carried throughout the year - rebounding and defense.

After the Tigers workout this afternoon, they will practice again Sunday morning before the public receives its first glimpse at the team Sunday evening at Memphis Madness. The preseason celebration tips off at 5 p.m. in The Pyramid.
