Nov. 16, 2000
University of Memphis basketball coach John Calipari has announced the signing of Oxnard (Calif.) College forward Chris Massie to a national letter of intent to play next season for the Tigers. Massie signed with the Tigers on the final day of the early signing period.
Massie returns for his sophomore season at Oxnard College after averaging 20 points and 15 rebounds as a freshman. In addition to being named to the JUCO All-American team, Massie was named all-Western State Conference and all-state as a rookie.
Oxnard College captured the Western State Conference championship and advanced to the second round of the junior college playoffs before being upset. Massie missed the game because of an illness in his family. The Condors are picked to win the conference championship again this season.
The Arcola, Texas, native enters his sophomore season as a preseason all-conference and all-America selection and has been ranked the No. 1 power forward in the nation according to The Sporting News.
Massie is the fourth player to sign an NLI with the Tigers, joining high school seniors Duane Erwin, Anthony Rice and Dajuan Wagern. Both Hoop Scoop and USA Today have ranked the Tigers' recruiting class as the best in the nation.
