Crawford Named Conference USA Freshman Of The Week
Dec. 20, 2010
IRVING, Texas - University of Memphis' Chris Crawford has been named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday. It is the second time this season a Tiger received this weekly honor, as Antonio Barton was selected for the accolade on Nov. 15.
Crawford came off the bench to score a season-high 18 points in 32 minutes in the Tigers' 70-68 overtime win against Austin Peay on Dec. 16. The 6-foot-4 guard also grabbed four rebounds and dished out four assists. He was 6-of-11 from the field, including 5-of-8 from the three-point arc. The six field goals made and five treys made both were season bests.
In the win over Austin Peay, Crawford had only six points, two rebounds and one assist at halftime, but exploded in the second half and overtime to finish with 18 points, four boards, four assists and two steals.
The Memphis, Tenn., native came with big plays for Memphis in the second half and overtime. In a Tigers' 10-0 second-half run that tied the game at 47-all, Crawford hit two three-pointers. Then, in overtime, he hit treys on back-to-back possessions to give Memphis the lead for good at 62-60 with 2:35 left. Crawford also assisted on the next two Tiger baskets (Will Barton three-pointer, Will Coleman layup) to help Memphis extend its lead to 67-62 with 1:00 remaining in overtime.
For the season, Crawford is averaging 9.9 points and 3.3 rebounds, while shooting 45.1 percent from the floor and 41.7 percent from the three-point line. He also has 21 assists and 17 steals.
The Tigers (8-1) return to action Monday, Dec. 20 when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (4-6) at 7 p.m. (CT) at FedExForum.
