BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Corey White scored on a 30-yard touchdown run with
13 seconds left in the game and UAB overcame a second-half comeback by Memphis
to defeat the Tigers 35-28 Saturday night.
After Memphis tied the game at 28-28 on an 11-yard TD run by DeAngelo
Williams with 1:37 left, UAB's Reggie Lindsey took the ensuing kickoff about 2
yards deep in the end zone. He hesitated, then ran the ball all the way out to
the UAB 47-yard line.
Quarterback Darrell Hackney drove the Blazers to the Memphis 30. On first
down he handed the back to White, who ran up the middle, broke free and outran
Memphis defenders to the end zone.
Hackney threw three touchdown passes to Roddy White to lead UAB (2-1, 1-0
Conference USA). Hackney completed 21 of 31 passes for 398 yards as UAB had 539
yards of total offense. Roddy White caught eight passes for 177 yards, while
Dan Burks led UAB on the ground with 146 yards on 23 carries.
Quarterback Danny Wimprine completed 26 of 43 passes for 347 yards to lead
Memphis (3-1, 0-1). Tavares Gideon and Darron White caught five passes each for
Memphis, with two of Gideon's catches going for touchdowns. Williams led the
Memphis ground game with 92 yards on 24 carries.
The victory was UAB's fifth in a row over Memphis and broke the Tigers'
five-game road winning streak. Memphis was trying to start a season 4-0 for the
first time since 1961.
