Jan. 13, 2012
MEMPHIS, TENN. - With the official start of the spring semester this week, head football coach Justin Fuente has added two players for the 2012 roster. Quarterback Jacob Karam has transferred to the University of Memphis from Texas Tech, and offensive lineman Antonio Foster has signed with the Tigers out of Northeast Mississippi Community College.
Karam (6-0, 205) graduated magna cum laude from Texas Tech on Dec. 17, 2011, with a degree in university studies/pre-law and will be eligible to play this season without sitting out following the transfer. In 2011, he played in five games and completed 9-of-17 pass attempts for 104 yards and two touchdowns. His two touchdown passes were against then-18th ranked Baylor (a 43 yarder) and Texas State. He saw one game of action in 2010 as a redshirt freshman. Karam came out of Friendswood (TX) High as a four-star quarterback and the No. 24 overall quarterback nationally by Scout.com. As a senior, he threw for 3,291 yards and 38 touchdowns en route to earning District 24-4A Most Valuable Player accolades.
Foster (6-4, 300) played two seasons at Northeast Mississippi Community College where he earned MACJC All-State and NJCAA All-Region XXIII honors in 2011, and was an honorable mention selection to the NJCAA All-America team in 2010. Last season, Foster helped to bolster an offensive line that saw NEMCC's offense become one of the most prolific in school history. Northeast scored 254 points in 2011, which ranked fifth in school history. The Tigers tallied 2,618 yards of total offense as Foster helped lead the squad to a 6-4 record and the team's first playoff appearance since 2005. Foster previously signed with Georgia Tech in 2009 following his prep career at Valdosta (GA) High and redshirted that season before transferring to NEMCC.
Karam and Foster join defensive lineman Anthony Brown (6-4, 260), tight end Jesse Milleson (6-4, 255), offensive lineman MarKeith Minnick (6-5, 290), linebacker Bronterrious "Tank" Jakes (6-0, 225) and safety Fritz Etienne (6-2, 210), who signed with Memphis during the Mid-Year signing period. Brown, Karam, Foster and Milleson will be juniors for the 2012 campaign, while Minnick will be a freshman and Jakes and Etienne will be sophomores. All seven players are enrolled at the U of M, and will be eligible to practice this spring.
