Memphis moved a step toward practicing in full gear as the Tigers strapped on shoulder pads for the first time and went through a two-hour practice on Wednesday, the third workout of spring.

"It was good to get the pads on and watch the guys run into each other a little bit," said Memphis head coach Justin Fuente. "I thought we showed some physicalness on both sides of the ball.

"It was what you would expect this early in spring with big plays on both sides of the ball," Fuente added. "We have to get a lot more consistent and disciplined. But I am really excited about our guys' effort, attitude and dedication to building a program."

Memphis will practice a total of 15 times during a spring camp which culminates with the Spring Game on April 11. This, the opening week, is the busiest with four practices. The Tigers wrap up Week One on Friday with its first workout in full pads.

Following Friday's workout the team will get a week off as the university is on spring break next week. The Tigers will resume spring practices on March 18.

"I expect us to stay focused. It is the Friday before spring break on purpose as a test to see how we can handle it," Fuente said. "We will finish our work in the classroom then come out here Friday afternoon and have a great day in full pads. We will do some legitimately live stuff for the first time."
