Tigers Wrap Up First Week of Spring Camp
March 7, 2014
The University of Memphis football program closed out the first week of spring camp with a situational scrimmage on Friday. The practice, the Tigers’ fourth practice of the week, marked the first time the team has been in full pads this spring.
“I thought the offense got after it a little bit and the defense responded,” said Justin Fuente who begins his third season as the Tigers’ head coach. “We had some big plays on both sides of the ball.
“I was encouraged by the level of intensity we carried out there. We are far from being close to being ready but there were some pads popping and guys flying around a little bit.”
Senior linebacker Ryan Coleman spoke after Friday’s scrimmage about getting back into the flow with the first week of spring.
“The past two practices we have been able to come out here and hit which has been nice,” Coleman said referring to Wednesday’s workout in shoulder pads and Friday’s scrimmage. “Getting the chemistry back together and getting the defense back together, it has been a real positive four days.”
Senior running back Brandon Hayes also spoke of the team’s chemistry and specifically on offense where the Tigers return over 20 lettermen and nine players with significant experience as starters. Hayes said the team already has a better bond and unity.
“We have been around the same group of guys,” Hayes said. “We know what to expect and know how to play off each other’s energy.
Through the first week of drills, Fuente said the coaching staff was able to evaluate its new players and identify individually what areas need to be addressed.
The Tigers will enjoy the university’s spring break next week before returning to field and going through 11 more practice dates including the spring game on April 11.
This week’s four practices also allowed the Tigers to get some base offense, defense and special teams’ technique in and the team will continue to build on that base once the squad returns to the practice field on March 18.
