Spring Continues to Please Fuente
March 20, 2014
Now in the second week of spring drills, the University of Memphis football team continues to perform on the practice field with an effort which has head coach Justin Fuente encouraged.
Thursday's two-hour practice was the sixth of 15 this spring. The team will close out Week No. 2 with spring's seventh workout.
"I am excited by what the kids are doing out here," Fuente said. "They are really playing hard and playing with some emotion. We have to learn to finish - finish ball games and finish practices. That is one of our focuses."
This fall, Memphis will play its second season in the American Athletic Conference and the Tigers continue strive toward being a team which can compete in the league. Memphis posted a 3-9 overall record in 2013 including a 1-7 mark in American play. The Tigers lost four league games by 10 points or less.
"We have a lot of things we have to work on but I feel like the kids are just so much more physical at practice," Fuente said. "We have to have that to play in the new league. It is just a more developed league. You are playing bigger, faster and stronger people."
Following Saturday's practice, Memphis will have two more weeks in which it practices three times over a seven-day stretch. The Tigers will close out spring with two practices during the second week of April, culminating with the Blue-Gray Spring Game on Friday, April 11.
