April 6, 2002

Memphis, TN - The University of Memphis football team completed spring practice with the annual Blue-Gray Scrimmage on Saturday, April 6th, at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. The scrimmage, which was played before more than 2,000 Tiger fans, featured all of the offense against all of the defense due to the limited number of players available. However, Memphis football fans left the stadium elated and looking forward to the fall of 2002.

Sophomore-to-be quarterback Danny Wimprine continued his outstanding performance of spring practice completing 20-of-28 pass attempts for 252 yards and two touchdowns. He connected with tight end Jeff Cameron on a 26-yard crossing route for the scrimmage's first score and later hooked up with wide receiver Travis Anglin on a nine yard scoring play. The Wimprine to Anglin connection clicked again when the two struck on a 52-yard scoring play later in the scrimmage.

Wimprine, who was named the Paul Gingold MVP for the Blue-Gray Scrimmage, finished the day 20-of-28 for 252 yards and three touchdowns, He also ran for a 10-yard touchdown to complete his afternoon's work.

Anglin, who was moved to receiver this spring after spending three years at quarterback, continued his impressive play by catching six passes for 141 yards and two scores. Junior Chris Cowley hauled in six passes for 46 yards and Darren Garcia caught four passes for 41 yards and a score.

Numerous awards were presented prior to the start of the game. Defensive backs Cameron Essex and Tristan Thomas were presented the 2001 Rex Dockery Memorial Scholarship. The Chris Faros Most Improved Player Awards were shared by Andrew Handy and Darren Garcia on offense and Scott Vogel on defense. Tight end Jeff Cameron was awarded the Glenn Jones 12th Man Award and the Ralph Hatley Scholarship went to freshman tight end Marcus West.
