Ifedi on Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List
July 14, 2014
Memphis senior defensive end Martin Ifedi was named to the 2014 Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List, the award's committee announced Monday.
Ranked seventh on NCAA FBS Football's Active Career Total Sack and Solo Sack lists with 20 and 18, respectively, Ifedi is on preseason watch lists for the Chuck Bednarik Award as well as the Broko Nagurski Trophy.
Ifedi, who graduated from the University of Memphis in May, enters his senior season on the cusp of setting the school record for quarterback sacks. He ranks second all-time with 20, one shy of the school record. Ifedi is coming off an all-conference season in which he record 52 total tackles including 14.5 tackles for loss and 11.5 quarterback sacks.
Eligibility for the Lombardi Award is limited to down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage.
A total of 123 athletes from 76 universities earned candidacy on the watch list by earning All-American honors, being named to a respective all-conference team or by receiving 2014 pre-season honors. The Lombardi Award Watch List will be updated prior to the start of the 2014 season to identify all players who receive significant preseason honors at the position.
The 45th Rotary Lombardi Award will be presented on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 in Ifedi's hometown of Houston, Texas.
