A week of acclimation to begin the 2012 preseason camp continued for the University of Memphis Tigers on Tuesday as the squad went through their second practice in helmets. The team will add shoulder pads to their workout gear for Wednesday's afternoon session.

First-year head coach Justin Fuente said that overall, Tuesday's workout was good but the team still has many things to focus on as practices continue.

"We still have a thousand things we have to get better on but we just have to keep chipping away at them," he said.

Fuente singled out the defensive unit as being "dialed in" during Tuesday's practice.

"I thought they carried some intensity throughout practice," he said. "They just kept plugging away. I think the defensive staff has really done a pretty good job of getting these guys to concentrate on finishing every single play regardless of the last play being good or bad. They just kept building momentum and I think they are doing a good job of communicating. They just seem to have an overall intensity about them."

Following Tuesday's drills, Fuente pointed out the efforts of sophomore cornerback Bobby McCain through two days of practice.

"I have been impressed with Bobby McCain," Fuente said. "He is just a football player. He is intense. He is tough. He is smart. He is competitive. I like being on the field with him. I know he makes the receivers better."

McCain, who played in 11 games and made nine starts last year as a freshman, was in on 29 total tackles as a rookie. The member of the Tigers' Leadership Council was also named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll during the off season.

The countdown continues toward the September 1 opener against UT Martin. The Tigers will be in shoulder pads both Wednesday and Thursday before suiting out in full pads for Friday's practice. The team's first set of two-a-day practices is slated for Saturday.

After practices being open to the public both Monday and Tuesday, the Tigers will close workouts until FanFest later in the month.
