MEMPHIS - The University of Memphis football program took its initial steps of the 2000 season, going through the first of two practices slated for first-year players Tuesday.

Tuesday's drills were for the most part an introduction into being a Tiger football player.

"Everything is new to this group and you can't take anything for granted," said sixth-year U of M coach Rip Scherer. "It has truly been an orientation in every sense of the word. We have covered everything from how to hang equipment in the locker room to how to run onto the field."

The rookies went through an 1:30 practice Tuesday morning which focused primarily on individual position work and the squad will go through a similar practice tonight.

"It is definitely a different level," said freshman offensive lineman Travis Triplett from Parkway South High School in St. Louis. "Right now we are in small groups and getting into fundamentals. It has given us an opportunity to learn more."

In other camp news, freshman offensive lineman Jerry Brown has decided to give up football. Brown has returned home to Nashville.
