MEMPHIS, TENN. - Friday was a productive day for the Tigers as coach Tommy West gave the squad a treat - a later practice. Instead of the 5:45 a.m. workout the group had for the previous four days, West moved the workout to 3:30 p.m.

Friday was also the first day in full gear and the popping of the pads echoed as the group broke off into a spirited tackling drill during the third period of practice. The Tigers worked through drills for the first hour or so and then the quarterbacks had the chance to get some reps during the seven-on-seven session.

"I thought for the first day in full pads, it was a good day," said West. "Of course, we have a lot of things to work on, but overall our effort was good."

Later Friday evening, Tiger fans filled the ballroom of the Holiday Inn on campus for the Highland Hundred Kickoff Banquet. Speakers during the night included the emcee Forrest Goodman, as well as Highland Hundred president Jeb Hill, athletic director R.C. Johnson and West. The highlights of Johnson's speech included announcements that West's contract had been extended, and that a fund-raising effort is taking place to help build the Tigers a 12,000 square foot football weight room. Johnson said that the addition would cost just over $3 million and that $1.5 million had already been raised. He made a plea for all in the room to give to the project and to also purchase season tickets.

West spoke to the fans about the progress of the program through the last five years, and continued to tout his staff, two of which were starting their ninth seasons at Memphis - offensive coordinator Clay Helton and offensive line coach Rick Mallory. In addition, 30 newcomers introduced themselves at the podium and were treated to a standing ovation as they made their way around the room.

Saturday will be the first day in full pads, and West said that he plans to scrimmage a little in the morning. Both workouts will be at the Murphy Athletic Complex.

"All day tomorrow and Sunday will be in preparation for Monday's scrimmage. I would like to be fairly sharp on Monday from a discipline standpoint with penalties and balls on the ground."
