Tigers Complete First Workout in Full Pads
Aug. 8, 2014
While the University of Memphis football team continued to make strides during the first day in full pads, Tiger head coach Justin Fuente still sees several areas in need of improvement.
"We've got a long way to go and we'll see how we do tomorrow," Fuente said following Friday's practice. "We always have a long way to go and in any practice there is good and bad. You're going to have ups and down in camp. We had a long way to go yesterday too. We've made progress, but a long way to go still."
The Tigers are forced to regroup from the Friday practice quickly with the first two-a-day practice slated for Saturday. Fuente said the squad will go with shells in the first practice, before returning to full pads in an afternoon session that will end with a brief scrimmage.
"Tomorrow morning we'll put shells on and the practice will be a little lighter," he said. "Tomorrow afternoon we will go full pads and we'll practice and do a little bit of a scrimmage. No real situations, just first and 10, base offense stuff."
Asked what he'd like to see from his team in the scrimmage Saturday, Fuente noted the need for 22 players on the field to do what they are coached to do.
"I'd like to see us block, tackle, throw and catch and get lined up to do a good job," he said. "I'd like to see two people do their job where two guys are there to make a play and one guy makes it. That's what makes the head coach happy. The head coach is not happy when guys are turned loose running down the field or guys are turned loose up front and mistakes are made. I prefer for us to go out there and, on as many plays as possible, see 22 guys do what they are coached to do."
Saturday's practice will mark the completion of the first week of fall camp. Sunday is a built in off-day for the squad. With some players enrolled in summer school and taking finals, Fuente said he can see that some players are a facing a challenge heading into Saturday.
"I'm sure the guys are a little bit tired. When you start on the schedule we are on, being a Monday, we've got guys still going to summer school. It makes for a long week, but we don't practice on Sunday. It makes for an important day tomorrow."
The next chance for fans to see the squad in action is on Saturday, August 23 at Fan Fest. The day's schedule includes various activities leading up to a "mock game" scrimmage at 11 a.m.
