Tigers Hold First Practice Of Fall Camp 2010
Aug. 9, 2010
MEMPHIS, TENN. -
Fall camp has officially started with the Tigers' first practice of the 2010 season Monday afternoon at the Murphy Athletic Complex. The squad worked out in helmets today and will add shoulder pads on Wednesday. The temperature was right around 90 degrees with a heat index of 100 degrees, but there was cloud coverage that kept the temperature lower than expected. The squad worked 24 periods of practice, rotating between position work and team work, for much of the nearly two and a half hour session. "It was a typical first day," said Head Coach Larry Porter. "It was overcast and we still had some cramping, but not necessarily any heat exhaustion, so I was happy about that. All in all, I thought they fought through it. You could tell the intensity and that this is a new and improved team in terms of attitude, so I am excited." Quarterbacks Tyler Bass, Will Gilchrist, Cannon Smith and Ryan Williams all took snaps today. Andy Summerlin, who injured his shoulder in the spring, is still rehabbing his injury and is not throwing. "Cannon and Ryan took most of the snaps and Tyler took some as well," said Porter. "We will continue to give those guys a majority of the snaps, just for their development. They had some highs and lows today and they definitely must get better and improve, but that is across the board. We have a lot to look forward to." "We are on point in terms of our evaluation of the quarterbacks and I feel good about where we are," added Porter when pressed for his timeline of naming a starter. "It shows that the community and our fans care because that is the million dollar question right now. Everybody is concerned about who that guy is and I appreciate that. I can tell you that they are all working hard to become that guy so I am excited about that as well."
