Tigers Open Preseason Camp
Aug. 9, 2013
It was hot. It was humid. It was what has come to be expected on the first day of preseason camp for a college football team. With a heat advisory in place, the University of Memphis Tigers began camp at the Murphy Athletic Complex.
Thursday's initial workout was in helmets, jerseys and shorts as the team began a four-practice acclimation period before donning full pads next week. Temperatures reached into the mid-90s with a heat index of 105 during the first hour of Thursday's practice.
"We will look at the film and see how it was," said head coach Justin Fuente. "It was nice and warm which is good but we'll look at it. Our guys are genuinely interested in practicing, getting better and representing the city and the community. They were excited but everybody is excited the first day."
Thursday's practice marked the second, first day of camp for the Tigers under Fuente. For all last year, the tempo of a Fuente-coached practice was something new. For 45 returning lettermen and a class of redshirts, there was awareness of what to expect.
"Some of the guys know exactly what they need to do now," said junior cornerback Bobby McCain. "Last year we were learning. This year we are a little more experienced, a little more together and know a little bit more about the game.
"We know the playbook. We know what Coach Fuente wants at practice - the energy and the enthusiasm," McCain added.
Memphis will begin practice in the middle of the afternoon again Friday and Saturday.
The Tigers' season opener is Sept. 7th against Duke in Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
Ticket prices for the 2013 football season are unchanged from last year and the Tigers play a total of seven home games. Fans can purchase season tickets online at gotigersgo.com, or by calling the athletic ticket office at (901) 678-2331 or (888) 867-UofM.
