Tigers Hold Second Preseason Scrimmage
Aug. 13, 2014
Memphis Football conducted its second scrimmage of preseason camp, covering just over 100 plays on Wednesday.
It was the first scrimmage in which the Tigers played in live goal-line situations as well as down-and-distance segments. The offense worked from its own 35-yard line for the first half of the scrimmage and then worked the short side of the field during the second half of the practice.
"I think there was some good on both sides of the ball and some bad on both sides of the ball," said Memphis head coach Justin Fuente. "The defense played pretty well out of the gate. We flipped it around, and they didn't play as well. Conversely, the offense didn't play as well to start but played a little better as we went along."
For the first time, Wednesday's scrimmage provided real consequences as the ball was placed at the point of gains and losses while the crew of collegiate officials calling the practice stepped off penalties.
"It kind of brings it home of the ramifications of not executing when you are in second- or third-and-long," Fuente said. "It has been my experience that the first down-and-distance scrimmage you have highlights those things."
Senior running back Brandon Hayes scored on a 35-yard run during the second half of the scrimmage. Sophomore wide receiver Daniel Hurd had three receptions for 99 yards including a 30-yard touchdown catch.
Defensively, senior cornerback Bakari Hollier broke up a third-down pass attempt and had an interception. Junior defensive end Ricky Hunter had a quarterback sack and a fumble recovery during the scrimmage.
Memphis will return to the practice fields for two workouts on Thursday and the Tigers have a single, afternoon practice slated for Friday afternoon. The team will scrimmage twice on Saturday. The first will feature live special teams and later in the day, the team will hold another focused on offense and defense.
The third week of camp will feature another scrimmage next Wednesday and culminates with FanFest and a mock game on Saturday, Aug. 23.
Memphis opens the 2014 season on Aug. 30 when the Tigers play host to Austin Peay.
