Tigers Take Dip In Pool
Aug. 17, 2000
Memphis, TN - The Tiger football team attended a light walk-through session on Thursday morning at Murphy Athletic Complex but instead of going out on the fields for a practice, were treated to a swim at The University of Memphis outdoor pool.
"The team has really worked hard in this heat and we (Scherer and the staff) thought it was time for a little reward," said head coach Rip Scherer. "We watched some film, walked through some situations and then let them go for a swim. I think it really helped pick up the tempo of the afternoon practice."
The Tigers worked out in the 100 degree heat for two and a half hours in full pads during the afternoon. Contact work was limited but the squad did have a spirited team session during the final two periods of the day.
The defense registered four interceptions on the afternoon, including one each by Glenn Sumter, Fred Powell, Jason Brown and freshman Henry Washington. Quarterback Scott Scherer threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jeff Cameron and kicker Ryan White booted three field goals.
Former University of Memphis head football coach Fred Pancoast (1972-74) attended the afternoon workout to watch the team and his grandson Matt Adams, a freshman quarterback. He was introduced to the squad at the conclusion of practice.
In related news, The University of Memphis has announced a 1 PM press conference on Friday to address the situation with senior linebacker Kamal Shakir. Scherer and Shakir will be present at the press conference. Shakir will have a statement but will not field questions from the media.
