Aug. 19, 2000
Memphis, TN -
The Tiger football team held its first scrimmage of the fall at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium on Saturday and throughout most of the afternoon the Memphis defense looked much the same as last year's 23rd ranked unit.
Led by linebacker Kamal Shakir, nose tackle Marcus Bell and defensive backs Kosha Irby and Fred Powell, the defense held the offense to two Ryan White field goals until the final stages of the scrimmage. Shakir and Irby logged seven tackles each and Powell added five stops. Defensive end Andre Arnold had three quarterback sacks and freshman defensive tackle Eric Taylor recorded a sack, a fumble recovery and a safety.
Offensively, sophomore quarterback Travis Anglin completed 6-of-16 pass attempts for 80 yards and one touchdown, while junior Neil Suber hit on 4-of-8 pass attempts for 34 yards and one touchdown. Freshman Danny Wimprine, from New Orleans, LA, completed 2-of-5 passes for 35 yards and redshirt freshman Bran Webb threw for 22 yards.
Sophomore tailback Sugar Sanders led all rushers with 32 yards on 11 carries. Junior Dernice Wherry, who was moved back to tailback after lettering as a linebacker last year, had 31 yards on the ground and sophomore Quinton Cole added 26 yards rushing. Wherry and Aaron Meadows scored two short rushing touchdowns each and fullback Shaka Hill and Anglin also scored on short runs.
Sophomore Tripp Higgins was the leading receiver with two receptions for 42 yards and one touchdown and Sanders had two catches for 32 yards. Sophomore tight end Jeff Cameron also had a TD catch.
