Strong Final Day Pushes No. 41 @MemphisMGolf into Third Place Finish

MOBILE BAY, Ala. – The Memphis men’s golf team used a strong final round to finish third in the 15-team field at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate. The Tigers were the only team in the tournament to have all five of their golfers finish in the top-30 overall. Memphis finished just two strokes behind second place No. 36 Kentucky and seven strokes behind first place No. 27 Auburn.
Cory Gaylord led the Tigers with a 4-under 68. The round was tied for second best during the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate. The strong finished also pushed Gaylord into a tie for eighth place overall in the tournament with a score of 214; his 2-under-par finish put him only four strokes behind the winner Clancy Waugh.
Lars Van Meijel shot a 71 in the final round, moving him into a tie for 17th overall with a 3-over-par 219. Thomas Perrot and Erwan Vieilledent finished tied for 20th overall, just one shot behind van Meijel with 220. Perrot shot a 2-under 70 Tuesday, while Erwan Vieilledent shot a four-over 76. Will Pearson round out the scoring with a 2-over 74, giving him a 221 and a 26th place finish for the tournament.
Running concurrently with the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, the USA Individual Tournament finished Tuesday afternoon in Mobile. The 71-par and 7,158 yard course was also at the Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Course. The Tigers sent two individuals to compete, freshman David Long and sophomore John Luke Tyner. Long, competing in his first action since joining the team during the winter, finished tied for fourth out of 36, shooting a 9-over 222 over the three rounds. Tyner finished in 27th place, with a 23-over 236.
The Tigers will next be in action when the travel to the USF Invitational in Tampa, Fla. This will be the only tournament of the 2013-14 season when the Tigers travel to an American Athletic Conference foe hosted tournament. The Bulls currently rank No. 14 national according to golfstat.com. The three round tournament is set to run from Sunday, March 2 through Tuesday, March 4.
